Why Is the Pitbull Not Recognized by the AKC?

Ever heard of the Molosser family of dogs? No? Well, if you've ever gone to a dog park, then chances are that you've seen one. The Great Dane, Newfoundland and Rottweiler are all considered a Molosser dog. The most famous of all the Molosser's doesn't even exist really. Yes, a dog that doesn't exist. What we call the "Pitbull," isn't really. There really is no such thing as a "Pitbull," rather this term just classifies a type of dog that was bred for fighting. And, as the other listed above, the Pitbull is part of the Molosser family.

Pitbull at a Glance

Pitbull dogs are not recognized as a breed by any major dog breeding registry. Because of the broadness of the category, many other breeds may fall under this group as well. Basically, a typical pitbull dog can be described, more or less, as follows:

You will never see a "Pitbull" in the show ring since there is no formal classification of canines called this. Since the pitbull defines a category, rather than a specific breed, the following is a list of common traits seen among these dogs:

Confident
Quick Gait
Short to Very Short Coat
Loyal
Smart
Medium Sized from 35-65 lbs

Since these dogs were bred for fighting, the pitbull needs to be exercised and also happens to have a high pain tolerance. A perfect dog for those early morning jogs.
