The Peppy and Precocious Pomeranian!Believe it or not, the petite Pomeranian originated in Pomerania as a working dog! These cute and cuddly fur balls were bred from sled dogs and became popular in Europe as both a family pet and a working dog.
Physical Characteristics
As ancestors of the sled dogs of Iceland and Lapland, the Pomeranian stands proud at 3 to 7 pounds. Its small size classifies it as a Toy breed and is widely considered the smallest northern dog of its type.
Looking at the Pomeranian will warm your heart.
They are small and compact, but full of charm and character. Some liken this dog to a fox. With its tiny, high-set ears and small square face, the Pomeranian definitely has a few traits in common with the fox. But more distinct than there petite features is the Pomeranian coat. These little dogs have long, double coated coats with curly tails that fold over its back. The top coat is thick and straight, where the undercoat is soft and fluffy. Poms, as they are affectionately nicknamed, come in a variety of standard colors. Common coat colors include black, tan, chocolate, cream, orange, red and even blue! Also parti-colored Poms are quite common. These Poms have coats with various shades. A few popular color combinations include black and white, brindle, chocolate sable and beaver.
The beautiful coat and tail of the Pomeranian make all the grooming worth while!
The Pom Personality
These lively little fireballs love to play and interact! Characterized as friendly, they get along with most other dogs, children and adults. Easy to train due to their intelligence, the Pomeranian makes a great family pet.
If you do decide on a Pomeranian as your family pet, be prepared to cuddle! Prone to cuddling just as much as play, the Pom likes to be the center of attention. Their curiosity also makes them a good watchdog.
Pom Pampering
If you purchase a dog with long hair, you will be required to make regular grooming appointments. The Pomeranian coat is one of its most beautiful features and if stayed on top of, is not much more work than a short-haired pooch. Daily brushing is needed as the coat is prone to shedding. But, if brushed daily, the Pom coat will not leave trails of hair in its wake, which is a great incentive to brush!
Besides brushing, regular ear, teeth and eye checks are needed. The Pom is susceptible to teeth problems, so a professional cleaning by the Veterinarian will help avoid any permanent and fatal health problems. This along with daily brushing will add years to your precious Pomeranians life. |
