Oh Those Precious Petite Pooches!

Anyone who has had or currently owns a miniature dog will tell you that they are anything but! These Toy breeds are tiny in size, but often times big in heart. There are many small-sized breeds, but the Toy, or miniature, is known for its companionship rather than its work capabilities.

Here Are a Few of the More Well-Known Miniature Breeds:

The Sturdy Affenpinscher
A Toy Poodle sized dog with the demeanor of a rodent seeking terrier. Perhaps this is because they were once used as rodent hunters back in Europe
where they originate.

The Affenpinscher is known for his devout loyalty and sometimes rowdy behavior. Docile while in his home environment, yet easily excited when provoked. Overall, a nice house dog due to his diminutive size, intelligence and devoted companionship.

The Family Bolognese
These cuddly white fluffy dogs just make your heart glad! They originated from Bologna, Italy, which explains their name sake, and are a part of the Bichon family. Bologneses are known for their watchdog abilities. Extreme family loyalty and high intelligence make them a perfect family pet. They will bark when need be, but out of necessity rather than "just because," which runs rampant in toy breeds.

Lively Boston Terriers
Terriers are known for their spirited personalities and the Boston is no exception. Almost without exception the Boston terrier is seen wearing a dark coat with distinctive white markings. Their owner's will tell you how loving and friendly they are despite their somewhat tiny Bull Dog likeness. The Boston came about by breeding a Bull Dog with an English Terrier, which is why their physical appearance mirrors that of the Bull Dog, but they take on the lively and sweet personality of the English Terrier.

Cairn Terrier - Don't Forget Toto!
Yes, Toto was a Cairn terrier. Cute, aren't they?! As about all terriers were bred for rodent hunting, so was the Cairn. These miniature dogs come from an island right off of Scotland. The Scottish, along with many other people (!) continues to claim the Cairn terrier as a favorite. Their compact little bodies are perfect for home companionship, while sporting high intelligence, curiosity and durable strength.

Crazy About Chihuahuas
Recently these little, Ok for the record the world's tinniest dogs, have soared in popularity. Whether this is due to an unnamed heiress touting hers around or because they are perfect for small living is unknown. It is till unknown where exactly they originate. It's been speculated that the Chihuahua comes from Asia, Europe or Mexico. Regardless of where they originated one thing's for sure - they are here to stay!
