Doggie Bones - Good or Bad?

More than likely you have seen cartoons with the dogs chewing on a bone, and you probably have given your dog bones in the past as well. Recently some veterinarians came up with the idea that bones are bad, and now people have stopped giving dogs some of their favorite treats ever.

Now there are some disagreements over whether or not bones are good or bad for dogs. While some veterinarians think that bones can be a big health risk for dogs, there are others that think that
dog bones are actually an important part of a doggie diet. So, which is actually the truth?

A Few Good Things
A veterinarian from Australia, Tom Lonssdale, actually believes that raw bones are a very healthy and natural type of food for dogs. Bones give the dogs protein that are needed, and they also have minerals that dogs need to have as well. Not only do they provide some nutrition for dogs, but Lonssdale actually states that bones actually help to take care of the teeth of canines as well. Periodontal disease can be avoided and even reversed by giving your dog bones according to this veterinarian.

Bones are Bad
Another veterinarian from Bellingham, Washington named Ed Sullivan actually believes that bones are very bad for your dog. In fact, he actually advises pet owners to avoid giving their dog any bones as well. He believes that giving your dog bones can result in a variety of problems, including fractures of the teeth, chocking, intestinal problems, and stomach upset as well. He does actually say that he does not usually see many dogs that have a problem with eating bones, but they do see problems with dogs and toys, clothing, strings, rocks, and even plastic bags as well.

So What is the Truth?
The most important thing that you need to know when you give your dog a bone is that there are both good bones and some bad bones. While it seems that your dog can actually reap quite a few benefits from eating bones, there are some bones that may cause some problems. Although there are occasionally accidents with bones, they provide great nutrients to your dog, so it is worth the very small risk.

When you are getting bones for your dog, be sure that they are not sawed or sharply angled as well. Look for ribs, chicken, beef tails, necks of lamb, beef, and turkey. Also try to get the bones that have meat on them and no fat to make sure that your dog gets good nutrition from the bones.
