Do You Need an Attack Dog?

It is not surprising that dogs do sometimes act in a violent manner when you consider that they are genetically related to the Gray Wolf. But because of careful breeding practices aimed at eliminating predator instincts, most breeds of domestic dogs have come to readily accept humans as part of their packs and, often, as a superior breed.

But there are times when it is necessary for dogs to be aggressive, such as trained guard and attack dogs.

A tendency to bark a lot is a desired trait for guard dogs. Guard dogs should be territorial and devoted to the people they
are guarding. They should also be big or at least make a lot of noise. One dog that belongs in this category is the Mastiff. Mastiffs are of a very large size and have deep, booming bark that intimidates most trespassers, very much like the Saint Bernard. If properly trained for such duties, Mastiffs make exceptional guard dogs. Without the training, they are extremely friendly but the bark can still intimidate.

Sometimes, an attack dog, as well as a guard dog, is needed. This is especially true for those living on large estates where trespassers are more likely to have criminal intent. But criminals are savvy when it comes to guard dogs and attack dogs. They know that approaching in a friendly manner can quiet breeds like the Mastiff. They often carry dog treats just for this purpose as a treat and a pat will often result in the Mastiff going off happily to eat his treat. There are dog breeds that will only respond to perceived threats against their masters but will ignore threats to property. Breeds, like the Pit Bull, will often view the mailman and the milkman as threats to their masters.

When firearms aren't an option, an attack dog can be used for personal safety protection. Territorial dogs are not very useful for this type of protection. The training for an attack dog is at a much higher level than for guard dogs. They must know when to stand their ground, when barking is enough, when to attack and to release on it is appropriate or when commanded. Because of the need for absolute obedience, dogs that are independent minded, like Pit Bulls, who might get stubborn and direct their aggression in the wrong direction, are not good choices for attack dogs.

Dog breeds that are to be attack dogs need to have a balanced temperament, too. A St. Bernard, because of its gentle nature, is not a good choice as it can not be trained to be aggressive on command. On the other hand, breeds that can display fierceness and be trained easily as attack dogs as Bulldogs, German Shepherds, Dobermans, and Rottweilers.

Being a very responsible owner/handler is an absolute necessity with attack dogs. Keep this very much in mind if you feel you need an attack dog. Irresponsible owners and handlers have resulted in attacks on innocent people by Pit Bulls has caused this breed to be outlawed in many areas.
