Beagle Dogs - Hunting Prowess and Family Fun

More than likely you have at least seen a beagle dog at some point in your life; however you may not know how fun loving these cute dogs really are. Like all hounds, beagles enjoy chasing almost anything that happens to get their attention. Not only are these dogs excellent hunting dogs, but they also make great pets for families as well. Even if you have small kids, they are excellent dogs to have around.

History of the
Breed
Beagles were actually developed in England and were a cross breed of Harrier dogs and various dogs of the hound family. The reason these dogs were initially developed was primarily for hunting. Beagle dogs are excellent hunters and they have been use for hunting hares, quail, and even pheasants through the years. They are quick to pick up on the scents of animals, which is why they are known to many as a "Scent Hound."

Appearance of Beagle Dogs
Beagles look a great deal like other dogs in the hound family. Their coat is about medium in length and is designed to protect them, and it is also extremely easy to groom as well. Their coat does not feel smooth or silky, but the hairs are actually quite hard for protection. Since their hair lies quite close to their body, they actually look somewhat like a small English foxhound.

The Temperament and Character of Beagle Dogs
These dogs love to have fun and they also enjoy being a part of the family as well. Beagles also have a great deal of energy and they make great companies for kids as well. It is important to note that beagles need to be trained properly or they may not behave as you would like them too. They tend to have rather short attention spans if they are not properly trained, so be sure that you give them obedience training if you want to have one for your family.

Caring for a Beagle
Beagle dogs need the appropriate care as well. They will need to be brushed every day, and a bath will be important from time to time as well. Their ears also need some special care, since hounds often get ear infections or other types of ear problems. You will also need to be sure that their nails are trimmed on a regular basis too in order to avoid any scratches or mishaps.
