The fluffy fur can be accounted for by the Arctic origins of the American Eskimo dog, which is a member of the Spitz dog family.
American Eskimo dogs have a temperament similar to the Malamute and the Siberian Husky as far as having a
playful nature but it is more intelligent and is easier to train than its relatives. Being friendly dogs that are pack oriented,
the American Eskimo dog is devoted to every member of the family and highly suspicious of strangers. They will bark to alert the
presence of strangers but do not attack. For this reason, they make very good guard dogs for families.

American Eskimo dogs make very good companion dogs because of these attributes. They are very much desired as family pets because
they are friendly and very trainable. When kept well groomed, they are exceptionally handsome dogs. They are a great choice for
people getting a dog for the first time, including children. They not only provide companionship but also work well as therapy
dogs.
Like most dogs, especially those from the Polar Regions, American Eskimo dogs need plenty of exercise and play. This is
especially true when they are puppies and have a seemingly inexhaustible energy supply. Growing from puppies to mature dogs is a
slow process, so the greater need for exercise can seem like too much for some people but it can give motivation to the owners to
get more exercise themselves.
The quantity of hair can prove to be a problem on American Eskimo dogs. It needs to be kept clean so the dog keeps looking and
feeling good. Since American Eskimo dogs are adapted to cold climates, they do not get the same doggy smell as other dogs but do
develop a stinky odor from the dirt and grime that adheres to their coats. Their undercoats can take on a yellowish stain if it
is not cleaned regularly. A good grooming routine is a weekly shampoo and daily brushing.
Another problem American Eskimo dogs face is infestation with ticks and fleas. Ticks are harder to find with their long, thick
hair and fleas have a larger area to inhabit because of it, too. A periodic shampooing with anti-flea shampoo will help alleviate
this problem.
Few other dogs are as beautiful at play as the American Eskimo dog, and they do love to play. If you are considering getting an
American Eskimo dog, be prepared to spend considerable time playing with him.
